The Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique is a minimally invasive option for treating gum recession. Unlike traditional grafting techniques, PST is incision and suture free. All of the tools and techniques used to perform the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique were created by Dr. John Chao, and who trained Dr Anwar.

Most people suffer from a mild form of gum disease (gingivitis) that can sometimes produce sore and bleeding gums, and often the plaque will harden on the teeth forming a hard deposit (calculus). A small proportion of the population (10-15%) are, however, more susceptible to the effects of plaque and permanent damage may be caused to the attachment of the gum to the tooth (periodontitis). This can result in the formation of gaps between the gums and the teeth (pockets) in which more plaque can collect and thus continue the disease process. As the pockets deepen, the supporting bone around the teeth can gradually be lost and the teeth may become loose.

Periodontal disease can in most cases be controlled, to avoid further loss of bone around the teeth, but there is no cure and lost bone cannot usually be replaced.

Gum disease is caused by bacteria rich plaque and tartar on the teeth. This bacteria causes harmful chemicals to irritate the gums and cause bleeding.
When the plaque is not effectively removed daily, gums become swollen and bleed, and over time gums pull away from teeth, causing periodontal pockets. These pockets then become an area for more plaque and tartar to build up and the problem can progress even further, resulting in teeth becoming loose.

Around 60% of the population is susceptible, however, this can be aggravated by genetics, stress or smoking. Certain conditions such as uncontrolled diabetes, cardiovascular disease or even pregnancy may increase susceptibility.

Before Jon came to see us at our Kensington branch, he had not visited a dentist since he was 12. His daily dental routine was pretty neglected and he ended up with bleeding gums. He firstly saw our specialist periodontist to seek gum treatment. Dr Anwar performed a comprehensive consultation. It was decided that Jon needs a Waterlase laser treatment. In one appointment only, his gums healed and turned from purple to pink. He then had an appointment with Dr Aleem, and the design of his own custom-made veneers started.
