What the Research Says About Enamel and Veneer Survival
Enamel is thin, particularly near the gum line, where dental research puts it at only about 0.3 to 0.5 mm. Veneers that need the teeth to be prepared take some of it away. In a nine-year study of 186 veneers in 35 patients, conventional veneers were prepared to 0.1 to 0.2 mm at the gum line, 0.3 to 0.7 mm in the middle of the tooth and 1 to 1.5 mm at the biting edge.
